President's Message

Wow!  Summer is flying by, but behind the scenes we are already getting ready to start our third decade of Garden Club of Cape Coral activities.  Although we don’t have monthly meetings in June, July or August, we are enjoying informal get-togethers to give members a chance to share gardening tips and maintain the friendships that have developed.

That’s what our club is all about.  Members, especially those new to the area, want to know “what should I plant, or what will grow here, because SW Florida is so different from where I came from”.  We hope to help answer those questions with our monthly meetings, guest speakers, and monthly special events.

We had a great season – our 10th annual March in the Park was our most successful one to date.  Due to the monies raised there, we were able to award 4 scholarships to local high school students, send financial contributions to six area schools, landscape the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build home, and support the FL Federation of Garden Clubs programs Camp Wekiva and Save Earth’s Environment through Knowledge (S.E.E.K.).

In addition, we held our biennial flower show at the SW Cape Coral library.  This year’s show contained some of new design categories such as botanical arts.  And we have been recuperating from the ravages of Irma; the rose garden at the Historical Society suffered quite a bit of damage that our members have worked most of the year to repair.

We’re working to make this next year even better for our members.  We hope to expand our outreach in the community with a couple of new projects.  Our committee chair people have lined up some great speakers and special events.  And our horticulturist is busy putting together guidelines for club plant exchanges as well as informational talks – so we can all learn “what should I plant”.

Should be another exciting season…please come join the fun!
