President's Message

Welcome back to our new season and a new meeting venue.  Just as plants thrive in our gardens in sunny Cape Coral,  our club has seen considerable growth over the past couple of years prompting us to hold our meetings in a larger facility – The Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral.  We look forward to many happy years there.

Member growth is a good thing, as this will be another busy year for us.  In addition to our fulfilling our goal of civic beautification via the Rose Garden at the Historic Society, the Butterfly Garden at the Southwest Library, and the City Hall Garden, we’ll be holding our biennial Flower Show in April, which recognizes the talents of our local gardeners not only in flower arranging but also in horticulture.

This year will be the 10th anniversary for our annual fundraiser -  March in the Park, held at Jaycee Park.  This past year the funds raised at this event were used to fund four scholarships for local high school students, support for various horticulture activities at six local schools, support Habitat for Humanity homes in Cape Coral, and programs Camp Wekiva and S.E.E.K  supported by FFGC.
These programs can only be successful when supported by you – it does take a village of gardeners to take care of our local gardens, grow plants for our GCCC booth at March in the Park, display specimens at the flower show, or participate in one of the other committees that keep our club going.

When I first joined the club, I thought it would be a chance to learn more about gardening in Florida.  Happily it has helped me with that goal, but membership has provided me with so much more.  The learning has come via the monthly speakers and horticultural instruction at our meetings, at our monthly special events.  But even more important are the many friendships made and the knowledge sharing with club members.  It’s this same kind of experience I hope to foster for all of you.

It’s an honor to be president of such a vibrant club and I’m looking forward to another great year!
