The Garden Club of Cape Coral

Marty Ward Merit Award

For the second year, Garden Club of Cape Coral has presented merit awards to local high school seniors.  Improved success of our annual “March in the Park” fundraiser prompted this addition to the club’s community involvement.  The $250.00 awards are named in honor of club founder and long-time advisor Marty Ward.  In 2011, two awards were offered and in 2012, five awards.

Marty Ward Merit Award applications are distributed through science educators, advisors for environmental organizations and guidance counselors.  Eligibility requires that students be residents of Cape Coral and high school seniors; that they have participated in course work and community service- ideally associated with environmental issues; that they provide two personal references and write a statement of their experience, opinion or future career interests related to horticulture, environmental issues or gardening.

A merit award committee reviews and ranks the applicants, who are informed of results by mid-April.  Recipients and their guests are invited to the May meeting to receive their awards.
